On September 25, 2024, a federal court in California ruled against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on the safety of fluoride levels in drinking water: 
 
  • The ruling

    District Court Judge Edward Chen ruled that the current recommended level of 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter (mg/L) in drinking water is an unreasonable risk to health. 

     
  • The lawsuit

    The ruling was the result of a lawsuit brought by environmental nonprofit Food & Water Watch and other anti-fluoride groups. The groups had been in court for almost a decade after the EPA denied their petition to challenge local water utilities. 

     
  • The EPA’s response
    The EPA said it would review the decision and that it currently regulates fluoride at higher levels. The EPA will decide what action to take, which could include warning labels or tightening restrictions on adding fluoride to drinking water.
